2022-2023 Beginning Band
TC Band wants you!
Is your child interested in learning to play an instrument? Join band! All Triton Central 6th graders have the opportunity to learn to read music and play a band instrument at school by joining Beginning Band. Not only can participation in music often be a fun and fulfilling activity for students, but children of all ages who participate in music are consistently found to perform better academically and in other areas of life according to academic research.
At Triton Central, band students are able to perform in concert band, jazz band, pep band, marching band, indoor percussion, and more as they progress into high school. In middle school, students start in the beginning band, which meets as a class every day during school.

Frequently Asked Questions About Beginning Band
When does band meet?
All Triton Central bands meet during the school day as a regular daily class.
Will band conflict with sports or other activities?
NO! Middle School bands have 3-4 concerts a year with one after school rehearsal for each concert. These are the only commitments for middle school band outside the school day. Most band students are also involved with multiple sports and after school activities.
Is there homework?
The only regular homework for band is practicing your instrument. Each band student must practice his/her instrument on their own. There are weekly graded practice assignments.
Do I get a grade for band?
Yes. Because band is a regular class during the school day, students receive grades like any other class based on participation, weekly practicing, etc.
How much does it cost?
This is a very hard question to answer. Every student must have his/her own instrument to practice with at home. Some students already have an instrument from a family member or friend. Most students rent instruments during their middle school years. Some will just go buy one. Each instrument has different costs. Please don’t let this be a deterring factor for your child to join band. I work hard with every family to make sure each student that wants to join band has the opportunity to do so. Please consult Mr. Shepherd before buying an instrument to make sure it is of good quality. Students are only able to fully succeed if they have quality instruments to play.
If I rent an instrument, when do I pay? When do I get it?
We work with Paige's Music to help with renting instruments. The cost to start the instrument rental is $42.75. If you couldn't come to the Sign-Up Night, you can contact Paige's directly to set up a rental contract. All rented instruments will be delivered to school the week before school starts.
Can students take their instruments on the bus?
Yes! Almost all instruments are easily taken back and forth on the bus. For larger instruments, like tuba, the student has one at home to practice with and one at school for class.
How do we sign up for band class?
If you sign up for an instrument on the Paige's website, there is nothing else you need to do. You can also contact Mr. Shepherd, and you will automatically be put into the Beginning Band class for next school year. It is never too late to join band!
